Activities in Costa Blanca, Spain

Costa Blanca is blessed with physical attributes that not only set it apart from other regions of Spain, but from all of Europe. These attributes bestow the Costa Blanca with the perfect environment for countless activities.

There's over 200km of Mediterranean waters primed for sailing, windsurfing, water skiing, kitesurfing and scuba diving (to name but a few). Backing most of the Costa Blanca are series of moderate mountain ranges that offer walking, hiking or multi-day trekking through wilderness and traditional mountain villages. Some sections within the mountains are now havens for rock climbing. Between the waters and the mountains is a bevy of beautiful golf courses that are in great shape all year round.

Dozens of clubs in most larger towns offer sports like tennis, basketball, football and swimming. If you want to try your hand a local sports, such as pelota or petanca, there are numerous places to indulge. There are even more than a dozen bowls clubs dotting the Costa Blanca.

Thanks to the Costa Blanca's heralded climate, which boasts 300+ days of sunshine a year and warm winter temperatures, you'll rarely ever be hampered from your athletic endeavours by faulty weather.

Golf

Golfing on the Costa Blanca is now an institution. The area around Torrevieja is the hotbed of golfing activity, with four courses in its vicinity and one more (perhaps one of Spain's best) only thirty minutes away in Algorfa. Courses in the north are also lovely, but they are spread out along the coast in Alicante, Benissa, Monte Forte del Cid, Mutxamel, Jávea and Dénia.

Walking, Hiking & Trekking

There are a plethora of places to take pleasant walk in the Costa Blanca. Some of the better spots in southern Costa Blanca include La Mata and Torrevieja Salt Flats Nature Park and Santa Pola Salt Flats Nature Park, where you can indulge in a little bird watching at the same time. Strolling down the Esplanade in Alicante, which shadows the port is also rewarding in an entirely different context.

The north, which has more mountains and a number of dramatic coastal headlands has more in the way of hiking and trekking. The nature parks of El Montgó Mountain, The Rock of Ifach, Sierra Mariola and El Carrascar de la Font Roja are all great for potential day hikes. The Sierra Mariola Nature Park is top dog when it comes to locations for multi-day treks. The Sierra Aitana, which sit between Alcoy and Altea offer some of the most underrated hikes in eastern Spain. Follow traditional footpaths along ridge lines, stare out over dramatic Mediterranean panoramas, visit remote mountain villages and limestone amphitheatres. The Bènia Sierra, due north of the Sierra Aitana, are also very rewarding for hiking. Northern Costa Blanca also has two of the Valencia region's famed Green Routes, which follow disused railway lines through gorgeous sections of the mountains. Xixarra winds between Yecla and Alcoy, Sepis links Muro de Alcoy to Gandia and an other meanders between Alcoy and Maigmó.

Sailing, Windsurfing, Waterskiing, Kitesurfing & Jet Skiing

We'd be here for days if we tried to list each and every place along the Costa Blanca to enjoy these water bound activities. Though it must be said that Alicantehas the largest selection of clubs and organisations offering these adrenalin fuelled activities.

Scuba Diving

Although there are dozens of fine diving sites along the Costa Blanca, there are two special areas whose seabed carry the designation of Natural Marine Reserve: Cape of San Antonio and the Island of Tabarca.

Bowls

Whether you're living in Dénia in the north of Costa Blanca or Torrevieja in the south, there'll be a bowls club near you. There are no less than 14 clubs stretched across this remarkable coast.

Rock Climbing

The limestone and dolomite south face of the Sierra de Orihuela, just outside Orihuela, has become a bit of a rock climbing mecca. Another area popular with those who prefer vertical ascensions is The Rock of Ifach Nature Park. Climbing over the Mediterranean must be a rush indeed!
